PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police in Williamsport have found and identified the bodies of two young girls who were buried in the backyard of a home after dying years ago. Officers have arrested their mother and a woman police described as her paramour.

Old Lycoming Township police said Monday that the bodies of Jasmine and Nicole Snyder were found in the backyard of Marie Snyder's house as part of a homicide investigation.

Nicole, who was 6 years old when she died or was killed, was buried in 2016, while Jasmine, 4 at the time of her death, was buried in 2017 according to investigators.

Snyder, 32, and Echo Lane Butler, 26, were previously brought into custody last week. Both women were charged with endangering the welfare of children before the girls' bodies were recovered.

"This situation is a travesty of colossal proportions," Old Lycoming Township Police Chief Chris Kriner said in a statement.

Authorities are sending the children's remains to a forensic anthropologist in Erie. The Lycoming County District Attorney is assisting with the investigation, as are the FBI, Pennsylvania State Police, and the Hepburn Township Fire Department.
