WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - A Big Three automaker has prompted a recall of one of its vehicles after receiving complaints about the SUV's headlights being too bright and causing dangerous road conditions for other drivers.
General Motors announced on Tuesday that it will recall roughly 740,000 GMC Terrain models from 2010 to 2017 after the U.S. government said the headlights cause an intense, "blinding" glare that can reduce visibility for oncoming drivers, WWJ's Jeff Gilbert reported.
GM had been fighting the recall and submitted an earlier request to federal safety regulators which was denied, according to mLive; GM gave up the fight and issued the recall on March 22.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration argued that the headlight housings in the vehicles caused reflections that illuminated too much light which could impact other drivers and increase the likelihood of road crashes.
WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert said so far there has been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.
“We are still finalizing an actual remedy for the affected vehicles,” spokesman Dan Flores said according to mLive.
The Detroit automaker anticipates sending out recall notices by letter on April 23; there is no word on how long it will take for GM to finalize a fix for the issue.
