Conservative commentator and founder of the Daily Wire Ben Shapiro has gone viral on social media after a review he did of the “Barbie” movie saw him set Barbie dolls on fire in protest of the film.
Shapiro shared on social media that he had seen the movie on its opening day and that he would be releasing a review of the film, which ended up being 43 minutes long.
“My producers dragged me to see ‘Barbie’ and it was one of the most woke movies I have ever seen,” Shapiro tweeted Friday. “My full review of this flaming garbage heap of a film will be out on my YouTube channel tomorrow at 10am ET.”
Even though Shapiro didn’t like the film, fans on social media pointed out that he was dressed seemingly identically to what Ryan Gosling wore in part of the film as Ken.
As for his review, which he titled “Ben Shapiro DESTROYS The Barbie Movie For 43 Minutes,” Shapiro critiques the film with his “pages and pages of notes” that he took while watching it on opening night.
“Well, folks, wasting two hours of my precious time, two hours I will never get back, two hours around my deathbed I will wish that I had not spent that time doing,” Shapiro said. “It makes me viscerally angry.”
Shapiro leveled several critiques, including one where he said the film had too many mature scenes for its target audience, which he deemed was “7-year-old girls.”
Among the scenes he said were too mature included one with sexual innuendos, Barbie’s existential contemplation of dying, and a reference to a landmark Supreme Court case. Other moments he didn’t like included the movie’s transgender Barbie and its claim that the real world is a patriarchy.
“I mean, Greta Gerwig is a lady. She’s making a good living off of this,” Shapiro said about the film’s director. “Margot Robbie is playing the lead. In fact, the entire cast aside from basically Ryan Gosling is women, so it seems like women are doing OK.”
Despite his nearly hour-long video criticizing the film, people online still made fun of him for his intensity regarding a movie about a Barbie doll at his age.
“seeing the barbie movie in theaters and shaking my head the entire time so everyone knows I disagree with it,” a person joked in a tweet, while another pointed out he was 40 years old.
Other responses to Shapiro’s response claimed that they didn’t believe he hated the film, instead alleging he secretly liked it.
“You know what? I don’t believe you, Ben. I don’t believe you didn’t like this movie,” a person said in a TikTok. “I want y’all to look at this outfit here for a second. … Ben, you literally wore a Ken cosplay to the movie.”
