Vice President Kamala Harris is calling on former President Donald Trump to face off against her in a debate, saying that he was “pulling out” after he said earlier this week that he would “probably” debate her.
The comments from Harris came while she was speaking in Atlanta, telling a crowd that “the momentum in this race is shifting, and there are signs that Donald Trump is feeling it.”
As for her challenge, Harris was responding to recent remarks that Trump gave while speaking with Fox News on Monday, saying that he would “probably end up” debating Harris but also giving several reasons he would not.
Trump said that his lead in national and battleground state polls and the public’s knowledge of both candidate’s stances on issues would dissuade him from facing off against Harris, despite Ingraham suggesting it might allow his critics to say he’s scared.
“The answer is yes, but I can also make a case for not doing it,” Trump said. “Also, I don’t like rewarding fake news … They’re going to make tens of millions of dollars with this debate. I don’t like ABC.”
Harris says that she hopes Trump will change his mind, challenging him to share his criticism with her directly.
“Well, Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage because, as the saying goes, if you got something to say, say it to my face,” Harris said.
During the event in Atlanta, Harris also hammered Trump on several issues, including the border, which she said he worked to keep in disarray by pushing for House Republicans to block a bipartisan bill that passed the Senate with support from Democrats and Republicans.
“Which goes to show Donald Trump does not care about border security. He only cares about himself,” she said. “When I am president, I will work to actually solve the problem.”
She also said that she would go after transnational gangs, human traffickers, and drug cartels.
“In this campaign, I will proudly put my record against his any day of the week,” Harris said. “I prosecuted them in case after case, and I won. Donald Trump, Donald Trump on the other hand, has been talking a big game about securing our border, but he does not walk the walk or, as my friend Quavo would say, he does not walk it like he talks it.”
