A man in Alabama is being charged with abuse of a corpse after police discovered that he was living with a dead relative in his home “for days” without reporting it.
The Walker County Sheriff’s Office shared the news in a Facebook post, noting that deputies responded to the house on June 9 after receiving a report that a family member was found dead inside.
Now, 61-year-old Leandrew Smith Jr. has been arrested and charged after police discovered he had been living there with the corpse for some time, failing to alert the authorities that his relative had died.
Smith is now being held in Walker County Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond.
“Treating a human corpse in a way that would outrage ordinary family sensibilities is a Class C felony,” the sheriff’s office said.
The cause of death for the deceased has not yet been determined, and police shared that they are continuing to investigate.
