Despite her constant support of conspiracy theories and efforts to “stop the steal,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has been named to the House Homeland Security committee.
Along with Greene, another well-known conspiracy theorist, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), was also reinstated on House committees on Tuesday after they were stripped of their responsibilities by Democrats in the previous session of Congress.
Greene has been known to promote several strange theories throughout the years, including a QAnon conspiracy, questioning who was behind 9/11 and whether it was an “inside job,” and several others, CNN previously reported.
The Georgia Rep. is also known to give a strange speech from time to time, including one she gave in December about sex toys being sold at Target while receiving an award from the New York Young Republican Club.
“By the way, you can pick up a butt plug or a dildo at Target and CVS nowadays,” Greene said. “I don't even know how we got here. This is the state that we're living in right now.”
Some former and current members of Congress have spoken out against Greene’s appointment to the committee, with its former vice chair, Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY), saying he is “HORRIFIED.”
Greene shared a statement about her appointment, saying that it is “time for accountability with Republicans in charge.”
Gosar is no less controversial, being kicked off of his committee assignments in 2021 after he shared an animation that showed him killing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and attacking President Biden.
Both Greene and Gosar were also condemned last year for their attendance at an event hosted by the well-known antisemite and white nationalist Nick Fuentes.
Republicans in both the Senate and the House spoke up over their appearances. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) called them “morons.”
“There’s no place in the Republican Party for white supremacists or anti-Semitism,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said in a statement at the time, NBC News reported. “There’s no place in our party for any of this. … The party should not be associated any time, any place with somebody who is antisemitic. This is unacceptable.”
Now, both Reps. will resume their work on house committees, with Gosar being placed on the Committee on Natural Resources and Greene also being put on the House Oversight and Accountability committee.
