An outside attorney has been brought in by Northwestern after allegations arose that hazing was taking place within the school’s football program.

Northwestern shared a statement on Wednesday announcing that an investigation had been launched “immediately” after hiring attorney Maggie Hickey of law firm ArentFox Schiff to lead it, ESPN reported.

“While we do not yet know whether the allegations are true, hazing is prohibited by University policy, and we take these claims seriously,” Northwestern said in its statement. “The health, safety, and well-being of our students is the first priority.”

The investigation will look into hazing allegations from this past season. According to the school, Hickey will likely interview players, coaches, and members of the team’s staff.

“The purpose of Ms. Hickey’s investigation is to find the underlying truth of the allegations — including the scope of any potential hazing activity or harmful culture,” Northwestern said.

Information revolving around the allegations is scarce, as the school has not said who made the allegation or who was involved.

“The inquiry is in its very early stages and will be rigorously fair to everyone in this process. It will focus on gathering facts and will not jump to conclusions,” the statement said. “Northwestern strongly supports members of our community who come forward with concerns and encourages anyone to report those concerns to the university.”
