President Ronald Reagan’s son said on Monday that he forgives the man who tried to assassinate his father.
"My father forgave him, so do I," Michael Reagan, President Ronald Reagan’s son, told KCBS Radio's Dan Mitchinson.
The comments came following an announcement that John Hinckley Jr. has been granted unconditional release by a federal judge. Hinckley, who tried to assassinate the former president four decades ago, can be freed from all remaining restrictions next year if he continues to follow the rules and remains mentally stable.
"If he hadn't tried to kill the president, he would have been unconditionally released a long, long, long time ago," the judge said. "But everybody is comfortable now after all of the studies, all of the analysis and all of the interviews and all of the experience with Mr. Hinckley."
The announcement has caused an outcry on social media with many people taking to Twitter to voice their concerns. Michael Reagan is a political commentator, former talk show host and is the President of the Reagan Legacy Foundation.
