In the two weeks since Russia invaded Ukraine, the Russian military has lost 8% to 10% of its military assets brought to wage war on the country, U.S. officials say.
A U.S. official shared the information with CNN, saying that the percentage represents equipment that is destroyed or inoperable.
Equipment includes aircraft, artillery, tanks, and other military assets. Estimates throughout the past week had said that Russia could have lost close to 5% of its assets, but now those numbers are doubled.
As for the other side, the Ukrainian military is also estimated to have lost around 10% of its military assets due to the invasion.
This information comes as diplomatic talks have failed for the third time, and Russia begins its third week of invading Ukraine.
New reports have shed light on the casualties seen from the fighting, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reporting that over 50 children have been killed due to the war.
The United Nations has reported that over 1.7 million refugees have fled from Ukraine into neighboring countries, attempting to flee the fighting.
Beyond those who have fled, since Feb. 24, 400 civilians have lost their lives, and 800 have been injured, according to the U.N.
Russia has also been in financial trouble since the start of its invasion, as crippling sanctions have been placed on the country by the U.S. and European nations. Currently, the Russian Ruble is worth less than one U.S. penny.
President Joe Biden made his latest effort to deter Russia from its invasion on Tuesday when he cut off Russian oil and gas imports, leaving one ship turning the other way off the U.S. coast.
