Three juveniles have been arrested in connection to a brutal New Orleans carjacking on Monday. The suspects are alleged to have dragged a 73-year-old woman to death, severing her arm in the process, before driving off in her SUV, according to WWL-TV.

Police say an arrest warrant has been issued for one remaining at-large suspect.

Violent crime, especially carjackings, have been on the rise in the Crescent City. The Metropolitan Crime Commission, a local police-watchdog organization, reports a 309% increase in carjackings in New Orleans from 2019 to 2022.

Already, 2022 has seen 90 carjackings, compared to just 63 carjackings last year.

The recent series of violent crime incidents prompted city leaders to issue a statement on what they are doing to end the violence.

The statement reads in part, “No one should suffer the type of horror inflicted upon our people – and no one should have to deal with the trauma that it leaves behind. But none of these words matter. Until the City’s actions meet the urgency of our words, there will be no change. The Council is exploring best use of federal dollars to address violence through preventive and responsive measures along with reviewing the effectiveness of anti-violence programs operated and funded by the City.”
