Americans have again shown their displeasure at the possibility of seeing the 2020 election repeat itself in 2024, with President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump being on the ballot once again.
The Washington Post-ABC News poll released Sunday showed that those who identify as Republicans and Democrats don’t want to have their former candidate on the ballot in the next presidential election.
Among Democrats and independents that lean left, 58% said they would prefer someone other than Biden in the next election. Similarly, among Republicans and independents who lean right, 49% would rather see someone new on the ballot than Trump again.
Still, Republicans do have some support for Trump, with 44% backing the former president to earn the party’s nominee. However, far fewer Democrats thought the same for Biden, as only 31% want him to run for re-election.
When it comes to potential outcomes of a rematch between Trump and Biden, 62% said they would be “angry” or “dissatisfied” if Biden were to win in 2024, and 56% said the same if Trump were to win.
Among those who would be “enthusiastic” about either man winning in 2024, only 7% said they would feel so about a Biden victory, compared with 17% for Trump.
Trump is still the only candidate on the board, being that he announced his candidacy far earlier than what is typical, doing so after the midterm elections in November. Biden has flirted with the idea of seeking re-election, saying he plans on doing so, but he has yet to make it official.
Other polls in recent weeks have examined the same question as many start to think about who could be the next person to sit in the Oval Office when Biden’s term ends.
A nationwide poll conducted by the conservative group Club for Growth last month found that President Biden had an edge over Trump but not other Republican challengers.
In a head-to-head matchup between Biden and Trump, Biden had a 48% to 41% lead. However, against the potential Republican candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the governor led 47% to 43%. Club for Growth shared in the poll that all results fell into the poll’s margin of error, meaning it could go either way for both matchups.
The Washington Post and ABC News poll found similar results, with Trump beating Biden 48% to 45%, which is also within the poll’s margin of error.
Biden’s approval rating currently sits among the lowest it has been throughout his two years in office. Among respondents, 42% “disapprove strongly” of the job he is doing, while 10% “disapprove somewhat.”
Meanwhile, 42% either “approve strongly” or “approve somewhat” of Biden’s presidency.
The economy has had a major impact on how Americans view the work Biden is doing in office. Among those polled, 58% disapprove of how he is handling the economy, as many reported being worse off with him in office.
The poll from Sunday found that 41% of Americans reported being “not as well off” financially as they were when Biden took office, while 42% said they were about the same, and 16% said they were “better off.”
There were 1,003 Americans polled by The Washington Post and ABC News between Jan. 27 and Feb. 1. There is a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
