A new report has found that the U.S. Secret Service is changing how it protects former President Donald Trump, as it will now surround his podium at outdoor campaign rallies with bulletproof glass.
The report comes from ABC News, which cited multiple sources familiar with the security changes.
While the safety precaution is primarily reserved for sitting presidents, the Secret Service is making the exception for Trump after his assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, last month.
Neither Trump’s campaign nor the Secret Service offered any details when contacted for comment on the reported upgrades.
The assassination attempt on Trump was the first attempted assassination of a presidential candidate since George Wallace in 1972. In its aftermath, security measures have been a top priority for Trump, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The new level of protection isn’t really new for Trump, as the former president received it during the last election when he was still the sitting president.
Trump is also expected to continue holding outdoor rallies despite reports saying that the Secret Service has recommended he remain indoors for his events.
Still, Trump has opted for indoor venues for all of his events since the July 13 assassination attempt. Trump has even gone as far as to touch on this while on the campaign trail.
“They’d prefer that we be in an arena. I don’t know why. But we’re not giving up the outdoor rallies,” Trump said in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on July 31. “You know, all those people that we had to turn away today at an outdoor rally you can have.”
