After running a red light on Saturday afternoon, a speeding driver in a Dodge Challenger killed eight people and left six injured, according to police in North Las Vegas.
At approximately 3 p.m. PST, the speeding driver reportedly smashed into multiple vehicles resulting in the death of eight, including some of who were young juveniles, NBC News reported.
A public information officer for the North Las Vegas Police Department, Alexander Cuevas, shared with NBC News that the driver in the Dodge Challenger had also perished in the crash.
It is unknown whether the driver was under the influence of any substance, but Cuevas shared with NBC News that "speed" was the main factor.
"The driver ran the red light striking multiple vehicles," Cuevas said to NBC News.
Two people were taken to the University Medical Center hospital, and one of them was pronounced dead there, Cuevas reported. He also said the six injured suffered non-life-threatening to minor injuries.
The victims' identities will be released at another time by the coroner, Cuevas said in a news conference.
"We have not seen a mass casualty traffic collision like this before," Cuevas said at the conference. "Please make this a safer community by slowing down. Pay attention to speed limits."
