A grocery store clerk and a robbery suspect were both killed during an attempted robbery in Chicago.

The shootout happened Friday evening at the El Barakah Supermarket in the city's South Shore neighborhood.

Police say the suspect, 24-year-old Nicholas Williams, was trying to rob the store with a handgun when the clerk, 63-year-old Ali Hassan, pulled a gun from his waistband and fired.

Williams was shot in the chest, but managed to return fire. He then tried to flee the store but collapsed and was found dead on the sidewalk about a block away.

Hassan was shot in the chest and back and was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

Police recovered three guns from the scene -- both firearms used by Williams and Hassan, as well as a third gun from behind the counter.

Hassan was armed legally and had a conceal-carry license, police said.

Two other people in the store at the time of the shooting were not injured, NBC News reported.

The shooting remains under investigation.
