A Colorado teen has died after reports say that he jumped into a lake that was electrified while celebrating the Fourth of July last week.
According to a report from WDBJ, 18-year-old Jesse Hamric jumped into Smith Mountain Lake outside of Roanoke, Virginia, early in the morning on Thursday.
Immediately after jumping into the water, his friends who were with him noticed that something was wrong.
The friends jumped into the lake to assist Hamric, who had fallen unconscious, but upon entering the lake, they noticed themselves getting shocked.
Despite being injured while doing so, WDBJ reported that the friends were able to pull Hamric from the water before beginning life-saving measures.
The friends called 911, and rescue crews arrived at around 4 a.m. and took Hamric to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The two friends who were with him suffered minor injuries, the report shared.
Fire crews investigating the incident detected electrical currents in the water, and police determined it was caused by stray voltage spreading from a dock at a nearby residence.
Hamric, a native of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, had reportedly just graduated from high school in May.
Investigators have shared that no foul play is suspected.
