Even though they were an integral part of his term in office, former President Donald Trump says if he’s elected again, his family won’t serve in his new administration.
Trump’s comments came while speaking with Fox News’s Bret Baier, saying that his family has been through “enough.”
“It’s too painful for the family. My family has been through hell,” Trump said.
Trump was referring to the criticism that his children have faced while working for him.
His daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, received backlash over their roles as senior advisers in the former president’s administration.
Many have wondered if the criticism hurled at the couple played a role in Ivanka Trump’s absence, as she announced late last year, when her father launched his 2024 campaign, that she would not be a part of it this time.
Eric and Donald Trump Jr., the former president’s sons, have also received their fair share of criticism, often being the subjects of SNL sketches and political talk shows.
Trump’s wife, Melania, has also been notably absent at a number of his campaign events, making appearances sparingly.
Trump discussed his wife last week while speaking with Republican talking head Roger Stone on WABC radio.
“A lot of people texted me about this and emailed me in preparation for the show. People want to know how she’s doing, how she feels about your 2024 campaign to regain the White House, and how she’s holding up during these outrageous, unfair, politically motivated attacks on you,” Stone said to Trump.
“She’s a terrific person. She’s a very beautiful person,” Trump said. “As you know, she made a tremendous amount of money when she was very successful as a model.”
Trump continued giving out praise in his Monday interview with Baier, this time discussing his children.
“Eric, my son, is a fine boy. You know him very well. He’s a fine young man. A good student, good everything,” Trump said. “Nobody has been through what my family has been through. Ivanka had a really successful line of clothing. I mean, making a fortune. When I did this, she was really — she closed it up.”
The former president is continuing to fight numerous legal battles. Most recently, he was arraigned for his role in refusing to give back classified documents. He has been charged with 37 felony counts but maintains that he was allowed to have them.
He even reiterated a point he made after his arraignment, saying that he wasn’t handing the boxes over because he had “to go through the boxes and get all [his] personal things out.”
The personal things included “shirts and shoes.”
