While speaking at an event on Saturday in Washington, D.C., former President Donald Trump gave himself the honor of being the “most pro-life president” in the history of the United States.
Trump’s comments came on the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the landmark case Roe v. Wade, ending federal protections for abortion. Trump was speaking before the Faith & Freedom Coalition Gala in the nation’s capital when he made his remarks.
Trump was responsible for appointing three conservative-leaning justices to the Supreme Court and has since used that to take credit for overturning Roe. While some have criticized him for the role he played, Trump owned it on Saturday.
“I sort of said that myself, actually. But I’m proud to be the most pro-life president in American history,” Trump said.
However, the comments from Trump have left some perplexed as he was recently criticized for his own criticism of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ law that would ban abortions after the first six weeks of pregnancy.
Trump alleged that the legislation in Florida was “too harsh” while he was taking shots at his No. 1 challenger for the Republican nomination.
Still, Trump didn’t acknowledge the criticism, instead boasting of his efforts while he served as president.
“From my first day in office, I took historic action to protect the unborn, very historic. Nobody else did anything near what we did,” he said.
Among the achievements the former president brought up included reinstating the Mexico City policy, which stopped federal funding from going to foreign organizations that perform abortions.
He also decided to take a shot at pro-abortion activists, saying they wanted to have abortions be “unlimited,” including “executing babies after birth.”
“They are the radical people when they’re willing to kill a child after birth. They’re willing to take it beyond the nine months. They are the radical people. They are the people that are really in trouble with the Lord,” Trump said before adding, “Every child, born or unborn, is a sacred gift from God.”
