President-elect Donald Trump has shared that he will attend the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed last month at the age of 100.
Trump confirmed his plans to attend Carter’s funeral when asked about it by the Associated Press as he was walking to a New Year’s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago.
“I’ll be there,” Trump said while declining to answer whether he has spoken with Carter’s family.
The Carter Center and his family broke the news of his death on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia. Carter is the longest-lived president and the only former president to reach the age of 100.
During his campaign, Trump took several shots at Carter, comparing recent inflation to what was seen during Carter’s time in office in the 1970s. However, Trump shared a statement following Carter’s death, noting that Americans owed the former president “a debt of gratitude.”
“He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that, I give him my highest respect,” Trump said. “He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed.”
Despite their disagreements, Trump said Carter “truly loved and respected our Country and all it stands for.”
Carter’s funeral is scheduled to be held at Washington National Cathedral on Jan. 9, and President Joe Biden is expected to deliver one of the eulogies.
Before the funeral, Carter’s remains will travel through Plains, his hometown, to Atlanta, where he will lie in repose at the Carter Center for three days. His body will then lie in state in the Rotunda of the Capitol for two days before heading to the cathedral and then back to Plains, his final resting place, where he will be buried next to his late wife.
Biden shared that flags will fly at half-staff over all government buildings for 30 days.
