Former President Donald Trump says that the Democrats let the “genie out of the box” when it comes to using the Justice Department to go after political rivals.

Trump’s comments came while speaking with Univision News on Thursday. The former president was asked about his remarks that the Justice Department was “weaponized” against him and whether or not he would do the same.

“They’ve already done it, but if they want to follow through on this, yeah, it could certainly happen in reverse,” Trump answered. “They’ve released the genie out of the box.”

Trump discussed his ongoing legal trouble, saying that the indictments he’s faced have not been for actual crimes but instead for political gain.

“When you’re president, and you’ve done a good job, and you’re popular, you don’t go after them so you can win an election. They’ve done indictments in order to win an election. They call it weaponization,” Trump said.

The former president went on to allege that his political opponents are pursuing legal action against him solely because of the upcoming election.

“But yeah, they have done something that allows the next party. I mean, if somebody, if I happen to be president and I see somebody who’s doing well and beating me very badly, I say go down and indict them, mostly they would be out of business. They’d be out. They’d be out of the election,” he added.

Calling the indictments “pathetic,” Trump said that the American people know why he is being charged in his four different cases.

“These are political indictments. These are Biden indictments, and the people get it. They really get it,” Trump said.

Currently, the former president is facing more than 90 different charges in four separate cases, two at the federal and two at the state level, in New York and Georgia. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him.

In the upcoming 2024 election, which is less than a year away, Trump appears to be the favorite among voters, as recent polls by The New York Times, CNN, and more have all shown the former president leading not only the other Republican hopefuls but also President Biden.
