On Saturday evening, in Monterey Park, California, a gunman opened fire at a local dance studio killing at least 10 and injuring 10 more before claiming his own life during a standoff with police on Sunday afternoon.

While writing on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, former President Donald Trump appeared to compare the treatment of the shooter — and the protestors from Saturday night in Atlanta — to the rioters who stormed the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

“10 dead in California shooting, horrible gun wielding ANTIFA protest against our great police in Atlanta - Nothing will happen to them despite night of rage and destruction,” Trump wrote. “Yet our January 6th protestors, over a Rigged Election, have had their lives ruined despite nobody killed except true Patriot Ashli B. This situation will be fully rectified after 2024 Election.”

The shooter, who was identified by Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, took his life in the town of Torrance after a standoff with police and SWAT teams.

Trump made his post to his social media site early in the morning on Sunday before information about Tran was made public and before he took his life.

In his post, Trump also mentioned the Saturday protest in Atlanta over the police killing of an activist. Protests turned violent, resulting in property damage and a police car being set on fire.

The post from Trump closed with a vague comment about rectifying the punishments that Capitol rioters faced. The former president has alluded to the possible pardoning of those charged and sentenced for their actions on Jan. 6 if he were re-elected president.

That would mean around 1,000 people who were arrested and more than 470 who have pleaded guilty could be among those to have their crimes forgiven.

As for the Monterey Park shooting, Luna shared on Sunday night, after it was confirmed that Tran was the suspect they were looking for, that he had used a magazine-fed semi-automatic assault pistol with an extended large capacity magazine.

Any motive behind the massacre is unknown at this time, but the investigation remains ongoing.
