A fun summertime getaway turned decidedly unpleasant recently when an illness infected the passengers of a cruise ship headed for Bermuda and South Carolina.
More than 175 people aboard the Celebrity Summit contracted a norovirus, according to the CDC, a total that includes 152 of the ship’s 2,144 passengers and an additional 24 members of the crew.
The CDC reported that the crew aboard the ship initiated an increase in “cleaning and disinfection procedures according to the ship’s outbreak prevention and response plan,” as well as notified guests of the outbreak and encouraged reporting any symptoms they might have and increased hand-washing.
The incident on the May 15 voyage marked the third norovirus outbreak so far this year on a Celebrity Cruises ship, again according to the CDC.
Among the symptoms reported by the passengers were abdominal cramps, headaches, vomiting and diarrhea.
The Celebrity Constellation and Celebrity Equinox both reported outbreaks in March.
