A combat sport dating back hundreds of years is growing in popularity with young people across the country.
Interest in fencing is on the rise.
Fencing began as military training at a time when swords were a necessary tool for any army, and eventually it moved from simple training exercise to full-blown sport. And that sport’s profile has clearly risen this decade.
Since the 2016-2017 season, USA Fencing reports they have seen a 68% increase and over 10,000 new youth members.
Coaches point to the mental aspect of the sport as a draw for young people.
“It appeals to people who want to be able to outsmart their opponents,” former Team USA coach Roberto Sobalvarro told Axios.
State-level fencing tournaments in some places have seen participation double in the last 10 years, according to USA Fencing.
