A woman is hospitalized and under investigation after walking off in the aftermath of giving birth to a child on a cold Nebraska sidewalk.
Latrell Crane witnessed the incident and said she was one of a group of people who stepped in to help, gathering blankets to wrap up the new mother.
“She was cold. She was in pain. She was crying,” Crane told KOLO. The baby was lying on the sidewalk, not breathing, still attached to the umbilical cord when she found them.
Then, inexplicably, the mother got up, wrapped a blanket around her waist, and walked away, leaving her new baby behind in 15-degree weather.
Local police located the mother up the street behind a house. She was taken along with her baby to the hospital. Both were in serious condition, according to the police report.
The baby spent at least five minutes exposed to the extreme cold.
Crane said the experience traumatized her. “I have two kids of my own, two boys. And she just left him on the sidewalk. It’s not cool. It’s not cool at all, man. I was the one that saved him,” she said.
