A woman from the Chicago area will spend the rest of the decade behind bars for torturing her boyfriend and posting video of the incident online.
Alexis Sykes, 23, was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison for what prosecutors call an "extremely disturbing" crime.
The incident occurred on January 2, 2021 at the couple's apartment in Roselle, about 40 minutes outside of Chicago. According to investigators, Sykes poured a pot of boiling water on her boyfriend as he slept on the couch. She recorded the act and posted the video to Snapchat.
"I kinda feel bad now because he got 2nd and 3rd degree burns from face to waist and they rushin him to burn center -- but oh well," Sykes wrote. "He still cried and beg me to drive him to the hospital." She included a shrugging shoulder and blowing kiss emojis in the post.
Sykes also hid the keys from her boyfriend, who watched the skin fall off his arms, according to police.
"The victim was finally able to get his keys and drove himself to a local hospital where shortly thereafter, he was transported to Loyola University Medical Center Burn Unit where he spent nearly two weeks and underwent skin graft surgery to treat his burns," police said.
Following the incident, Sykes went missing. Nearly three weeks later, she was arrested in Mississippi and extradited back to DuPage County.
Sykes has offered no explanation for why she injured her boyfriend, according to police.
"The cruelty displayed by Ms. Sykes as she doused her sleeping boyfriend with a pot of boiling water is extremely disturbing," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "Considering her complete disregard for the amount of pain and suffering she caused her victim, one can only come to the conclusion that she has most certainly earned every year of her 10-year sentence."
Sykes pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery by caustic substance. As part of a plea agreement, two counts of aggravated domestic battery and an additional charge of aggravated battery by caustic substance were dismissed.
Sykes is required to serve at least 85% of her 10-year sentence before she's released.
