St. Louis (KMOX) -- Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich filed a lawsuit in federal court on Monday for the right to run for public office again.

In 2009, General Assembly Speaker Mike Madigan got a rule passed banning Blagojevich from public office for life after he was convicted on corruption charges.

"It was a rigged process," Blagojevich said. "It was an unconstitutional impeachment process. I truly believe that (Mike) Madigan engineered this.

The corruption conviction was commuted in 2019 by President Donald Trump.

"Eventually, I'd like to get my law license back," Blagojevich said. "Eventually, I'd like to get my reputation back."

But does the former Governor actually want to run for public office?

"I may or may not. I don't have any plans to do it. The very thought of doing it again makes me groan."
