ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Abortions could to be a big topic during the 2024 presidential elections and it could be incredibly crucial in the state of Arizona.

Earlier this week, the Arizona Supreme Court gave the go-ahead to prepare to enforce a law that bans nearly all abortions in the state, similar to a law passed in Missouri.

The decision threw out an earlier lower-court decision concluding doctors couldn’t be charged for performing abortions in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy.

John Hancock and Michael Kelley of 'Hancock and Kelley' which is on air at KMOX every Friday at 8:30 A.M., discussed the issue on Total Information A.M. Friday before their show and Kelley believes the issue will not only be huge, especially in a battleground state like Arizona, but it will be the key driving issue this election.

"It counterintuitive to what we know in politics, causing typically the economy stupid," said Kelley. "But what's happening in the draconian bills that have come, here we are on this Arizona piece of legislation, which mirrors what Eric Schmitt implemented in Missouri, and now you're watching Donald Trump say 'I did this' but doesn't want to take credit for much of it."

Hancock says that you will see abortion policy around the country change when voters go to the polls in November, but thinks the pro-life side has done a poor job of discussing the issue properly.

"For years, the politics of abortion was easy because of Roe V. Wade on the right, so you could take a position that was generally not popular with the public, but they weren't voting issues," said Hancock. "I don't think it will be THE defining issue of the 2024 election, but it will have a turnout effect in the Democrats favor, particularly in suburban areas, so there could be some congressional seats that are in play because of this."
