ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has warned that hundreds of thousands of faulty airbags are still on Missouri roads and need to be replaced. The Takata brand airbags have killed 19 people in the U.S. when exploding after deployment, a press release states.
NHTSA says the problems have occurred after the vehicle is in high heat and humidity.
"Long-term exposure to high heat and humidity can cause a defective part inside the airbag to explode when the airbag deploys, potentially shooting sharp metal fragments at the driver and passengers," a release from NHTSA states.
They have confirmed 19 deaths due to the airbags and hundreds of other allege to have been injured by it.
Vehicles affected by the Takata airbag recall include those made by BMW, Daimler Vans, Daimler Trucks, Stellantis (formerly FCA), Ferrari, Fisker, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota and Volkswagen.
You can check and see if your car is included in the recall by getting your vehicle's VIN number and entering it at SafeAirbags.com. All recall repairs are free and replacement parts should be available for all vehicle makes and models at local dealerships, NHTSA says.
