(KMOX) - Lucas Kunce wants to be Missouri's next U.S. Senator. The political newcomer who grew up in Jefferson City and lives in Independence is a veteran who served 13 years with the Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan and works currently for a non-profit that fights corporate monopoly power.

"I really want to fundamentally change who has power in this country," explains Kunce. "I want to fight the big pharmacy companies, the big agriculture companies, the defense monopolies and every massive corporation in our country so we actually change who has power here. Missouri is where the front line for that is. We've been left behind by globalization, consolidation and we need to bring the fight here."

When asked if he believes any candidate with a (D) behind their name can win a statewide Senate race in Missouri right now, Kunce says he believes the people of the state will hear his message.

"No matter where you are, what the color of your skin is or where you came from that [massive corporations] is who is controlling our economy and its locking us all out," Kunce says. "We have fewer small businesses than we've ever had in this country before because massive corporations are holding us down. Wages are low. Workers don't get to enjoy the fruits of their labors."

Some may focus on the "R or D" behind a candidate's name, but Kunce says the people of Missouri have passed a number of progressive or populist ballot measures that show they want to take control and power back. He cites the statewide passage of medical marijuana, expanding Medicaid, increasing the minumum wage and fighting back against Right to Work.

Other Democrats who have officially announced their candidates include former State Senator Scott Sifton and activist Tim Shepard.

On the Republican side, former Governor Eric Greitens has made his candidacy official.
