(KMOX) - A Republican donor in Missouri is pulling his support for Sen. Josh Hawley and saying he has "shown his true colors as an anti-democracy populist."

Joplin, Mo resident David Humphreys, president and CEO of Tamko Building Products, had donated millions to independent groups supporting Hawley's Senate campaign. He's and his family also donated about $16 million to Missouri Republicans in 2016, including about $2 million to Hawley for his Missouri Attorney General campaign, according to The Missouri Independent.

But now Humphreys is pulling his support, and accuses Hawley of being partly responsible for Wednesday's riot in the U.S. Capitol. Five people have now died, including a Capitol Police officer, as a result of the violent storming of the building.

"Hawley should be censured by his Senate colleagues for his actions which have undermined a peaceful transition of power and for provoking yesterday’s riots in our nation’s capital. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to protect our country and its Constitutional underpinnings," Humphreys said in a statement to The Missouri Independent.

Hawley was one of several Republicans who objected to Wednesday's certification of the 2020 presidential election. He's been called on to resign from members of congress and his upcoming book deal has been canceled.
