LISTEN: Missouri AG Schmitt considers run for Senate seat: 'We need fighters in Washington'

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The announcement that Sen. Roy Blunt won't run for reelection when his term ends in 2022 has some big names in Missouri politics contemplating a run at Congress. Add Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt to the list.

Schmitt joined KMOX's Mark Reardon on Wednesday and was asked if he'll run in 2022

"I'm giving it very serious consideration. I think we need fighters in Washington, D.C. The way I've sort of handled this role is I believe in standing up for the people of Missouri and fighting the Biden administration. We need strong conservatives in Washington, D.C. So I am seriously considering it, but I certainly want to make sure I'm talking to my family, praying about it and talking to friends and supporters. But I have gotten a lot of encouragement and so we will see how that moves forward."

He's held his current office since 2019 and was previously Treasurer of the State of Missouri.

"For me, it's how can I best serve the six million people that I represent," Schmitt says. "I'm a 6th generation Missourian. I love this state and there's just good people here. So how can I best serve those citizens? So, that's really the calculation and the thought process for me."

He also stressed that Sen. Blunt's seat is an "incredibly important" one for Republicans.

"The Senate is 50-50 so the balance of power right now is with the Democrats," Schmitt says. "Democrats and the Radical Left control all the levers of power in Washington DC and certainly the Missouri seat in 2022 is a very important seat."
