Missouri among most dangerous states in US to drive in Thanksgiving weekend

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Nearly 1,000,000 people in Missouri are expected to hit the road this Thanksgiving weekend and there's a new warning that this is one of the most dangerous states to drive in around the holiday.

In the last five years, only four other states has have more fatal accidents per 1 million registered drivers over Thanksgiving weekend than Missouri. That's according to data from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and partcatalog.com.

Here's the top-10 list of the most dangerous states (fatalities per million registered drivers on Thanksgiving weekend):

1. Mississippi - 3.70
2. Montana - 3.22
3. Oklahoma - 2.55
4. South Dakota - 2.55
5. Missouri - 2.53
6. South Carolina - 2.52
7. Kansas - 2.46
8 .New Mexico - 2.44
9. Maine - 2.32
10. Louisiana - 2.28

AAA predicts 53.4 million people will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, up 13% from 2020. And they say 90% of that travel will be by automobile. In Missouri, 957,000 people are expected to hit the road.

"For the 48.3 million Americans hitting the road, make sure you and your vehicle are ready for the trip ahead as AAA expects to respond to over 400,000 calls for help over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Before any long trip, AAA suggests getting an inspection to check key components like the battery, fuel system, tires, brakes and fluid levels. However, if your vehicle has been sitting idle these systems are particularly vulnerable to deteriorating especially without proper care or maintenance."
