ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- We'll ring in the New Year with some winter weather.

Here's the forecast from KMOX meteorologist Dave Murray:

New Year's Eve...no weather concerns this evening for all the plans...temps for this time of year prety nice. There may be a few stray showers around but very limited...the core rain moves in well after midnight. Have fun...be safe.

Saturday is mainly a rain event...a steady rain ranging from moderate rain to drizzle. The cold air works in during Saturday afternoon...reaching 34/35 by 5pm. So this is mainly a rain event for us.

However...Saturday evening will bring a mix of rain/sleet/snow and some freezing rain...even in small amounts...that is not good...so anytime after 5/6pm Saturday night...roads will be slick. Pre-treatment of roads will be tough because of the rain...so be aware of slick spots...bridges/overpasses...exit ramps, side street, driveways, etc. You know the drill.

There could be enough of a mix to coat the ground. A little more in the way of the mix...along and north of a line from Rolla to Warrenton to Troy to Carlinville to Springfield, IL. More of the mix because the cold air gets in earlier. Snow in these areas could be an inch. The heavy snow 4 plus inches will be along the Missouri and Iowa border.

The next item is the cold air...dropping to 12 degrees and wind chills below zero late Saturday night into early Sunday morning...during the day Sunday...changeable skies with morning flurries and only about 25 degrees for the high...tough wind chills. This is certainly getting our attention.

Be safe... Happy New Year everyone!
