A dead body was found in a burning car in the southeast part of Wichita, south of Oliver & Harry.
Before 4:00 a.m. Wednesday, somebody reported hearing gunshots; when police arrived in the area, they located a 2002 Ford Expedition engulfed in flames in a grassy area near an apartment building in the 1700 block of S. Elpyco.
After the fire was put out, emergency personnel discovered a body inside the vehicle; police Capt. Brent Allred says this is being handled as a homicide investigation. He said the vehicle fire appears to be an arson, and that this was not a suicide nor an accident.
Capt. Allred says even the gender of the victim was unable to be determined at the time of the incident.
A coroner's report is pending to determine the identity of the vicitm, and the cause of death.
