The Sedgwick County Commission approved a 5-year partnership with KDOT for plans for the Northwest Bypass project.
Under the agreement, KDOT plans to match up $1 million that the county funds for the next five years.
David Spears from the county says to date, about a third of the right-of-way has been purchased, and says it’ll take another 15 years to secure the rest.
The interstate level bypass would connect US-54 at 167th Street West, between Goddard and Wichita, around northwest Wichita to K-96 in Maize. The project began in 2006.
The Commission also approved a boundary and name change to the Boeing Industrial District. The area will now be called "The Aerospace Industrial District of Sedgwick County, Kansas”. Both Wichita and Derby gave their blessing to the proposal, which will add 14 parcels and remove one from the district.
