The Sedgwick County Commission voted to amend policies and procedures for property tax relief for homesteads.
The original 2013 state law authorizes the commission to grant property tax relief when a homestead is destroyed or substantially destroyed by an earthquake, flood, tornado, fire, storm, or an event declared a disaster by the Governor.
Six key changes were announced, with the first stating that landlords would not be eligible for property tax relief under this amendment. Another change was explained by the county's Justin Waggoner.
"The second key change on here is the definition of destroyed or substantially destroyed. It adds language to clarify that groundwater intrusion would not count as a flood event," he said.
Several homes in the county, notably near Derby and Haysville, were plagued by basement flooding during the heavy rain events last May and June.
In other county news, Commissioners accepted the resignation of Kenya Cox from the Sedgwick County Community Corrections Advisory board.
The board also reappointed Jennifer Jantz-McCauley to the Sedgwick County Solid Waste Management Committee.
