
Sedgwick County Commissioners approved a furlough plan that will affect non-essential county employees.
While the plan is to furlough 150 county employees, 222 signed up.
County Manager Tom Stolz says the goal of these furloughs is to avoid layoffs. He did not rule out the possibility of a furlough for all county employees at some point in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Those furloughed will be told by the end of the week and will remain employees of the county, with paid health benefits intact. The furlough will run from April 19 through May 23.
The commission also discussed potential forms of property tax relief for county residents, due to the effects of the coronavirus on the economy. In the end, the commission voted to defer the motion for another week in allow for more information gathering.
