Non-essential employees of Sedgwick County, mostly office staff, were sent an email Friday in which they were asked to volunteer to be furloughed from April 19 through May 24.
If that doesn't work, County Manager Tom Stolz says they'll be forced to furlough workers.
Stolz says there are around 2800 county employees. While most are deemed "essential" like first responders, office workers are lacking enough work to fill their weeks. County offices have been closed since the middle of March.
Stolz says workers would be covered by their health insurance plans, but won't be able to use paid time off or vacation time, meaning they will need to file for unemployment.
The plan must be approved by the Sedgwick County Commission at their 9 a.m. meeting on Wednesday. Find out what else is on the agenda HERE.
