Three alarm fire damages a business near Augusta

-

Fire crews were called to battle a three alarm building fire east of Wichita.

It began around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night at the Apac asphalt plant and Zernco Construction just west of Augusta on US 54.

Multiple fire crews from several surrounding agencies were called in to help battle the blaze.

No one was in the structure, but crews had to deal with hazardous materials stored inside.

"About half way through the fire fight, we had so many explosions, and we were unable to keep the water flowing at extreme rates," said Andover Fire Chief Chad Russell.  "We had to back everyone out for a period of about twenty minutes," he added.

In addition, there were no fire hydrants on scene, and water had to be trucked into the location.

There were no injuries.  The cause of the fire is being investigated.
