Wichita City Council begins search for a new member

The Wichita City Council is looking to fill a vacancy, after the resignation of James Clendenin from the District 3 seat. Mayor Brandon Whipple tells KNSS News there are at least ten people who have expressed interest in the job. He says each candidate will have to gather at least 100 signatures, which will be taken to a district advisory board. The board will conduct interviews and send five candidates to the city council for final consideration.

The Wichita City Council will also be drafting a new ethics policy for council members. Mayor Whipple says local officials accused of unethical behavior can be investigated by the local district attorney who -- under state law -- can oust that person from office.

The Kansas legislative session begins this week in Topeka. Mayor Whipple says the City wants to make sure lawmakers are aware of Wichita's importance to the state, as a source of a large part of Kansas tax revenue.

Whipple commented during Mondays with the Mayor, on the Steve and Ted in the Morning Show on KNSS.
