The Wichita City Council on Tuesday approved a new city ordinance which would create a diversity, inclusion and civil rights advisory board.

The board will address topics like barriers and discrimination and will give recommendations to the council.

Vice Mayor Cindy Claycomb was concerned about the possibility of losing the entire board simultaneously when their terms expire. She said it would have been "devastating" to lose the organization's memory and knowledge of processes and procedures.

The Mayor and six council members will each appoint a board member, along with 4 at-large members. A year later, 6 additional members will be selected to help stagger the terms.
