-

The Wichita Police Department has seen an increase in catalytic converter in 2019 as compared to 2018.  Specifically, in 2018 there were reported 21 converters stolen and in 2019, the number rose to 201.  To date, in 2020, we have had a reported 21 converters stolen.

“WPD is aware of this concerning increase in converter thefts,” said Captain Clay Germany.

He adds that investigators are diligently working to address these thefts and identify those responsible.  Wichita Police is working with lawmakers, policymakers and law enforcement partners in the creation of a scrap metal database allowing law enforcement to identify those engaging in selling scrap metal and help reduce illegal scrap metal sales.

This database will be operational in July of this year.  Also, WPD is working to address the legality of individuals purchasing and storing converters who are not a licensed recycler.

Here are some proactive steps you can take to help prevent being a victim of converter thefts:

·         Park vehicles in well-lit areas so they can easily be seen by passing vehicles;

·         Park your vehicles inside a garage if possible;

·         Utilize a sensitivity alarm on your vehicle to detect any vibration or movement; and

·         Utilize security cameras.

If you have any information on these cases, please call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111, and if you see suspicious activity around vehicles, call 911.”
