The Wichita City Council heard pleas from the city's veterans, asking the group to approve a $75,000 grant to Passageways.
Passageways helps homeless military veterans. Their plan, called the Homefront Veterans Neighborhood project, would build 30 small homes near I-235 and Seneca in southwest Wichita. Each home would be around 500 to 750 square feet in size.
"What we're asking is for the city is to help be a proponent of change for this and just be a catalyst for this to help push it forward," one veteran said during the public comments to the council.
The $75,000 grant was approved but several council members stressed the need to put a policy in place for future funding requests.
Passageways has raised $1.4 of the estimated $3.5 million for the project, which includes acquiring the land.
The grant will be funded out of the City Council's Community Initiatives fund.
