The Wichita City Council passed the 2024 budget, which totals over $714 million. It maintains a flat mill levy rate of 32.762 mills.
Prior to the budget discussion, Council member Bryan Frye made a motion for the city to not exceed the revenue neutral rate, an action would have resulted in over $12 million less property tax revenue for the budget. Despite high inflation and increased assessed property valuations Frye said only the library system, one of 17 city departments, reduced their budget for 2024.
Mayor Brandon Whipple followed with a substitute motion to go ahead and exceed the RNR, which passed 4-3. Council members Frye, Tuttle and Blubaugh voted no. Following the RNR discussion, the budget passed 6-1, with Council member Blubaugh providing the lone no vote.
