70 years ago on this night, an extremely dangerous thunderstorm tore through the Wichita metro area; the storm damaged the tower on the old Sedgwick County courthouse at Central & Main.

Winds were measured at exactly 100 miles per hour when the anemometer broke at the airport, and hail of "at least golf ball-size" was reported.

The storm accounted for about $9 million in damage; that would be the equivalent of more than $100 million in today's dollars.

An estimated 6,000 window panes were knocked out of Wichita school facilities by the Sunday storm; Washington School near Central & Hydraulic lost 355 panes of glass.

The old abandoned Frisco Railroad roundhouse at 810 E. Kellogg was damaged, as one wall caved in.
