At Tuesday's Wichita City Council meeting, we learned the Northwest Water Facility (NWWF) is roughly 80 percent complete.
The update was part of a change order staff requested to cover additional costs to the plant, including piping for water disposal, additional chemicals to treat the water, a 64" pipeline conversion and other items.
Gary Janzen with the city says expect some additional costs to the city in the future prior to construction completion and when the plant becomes operational.
The new facility, located near I-235 and Zoo Boulevard, will have redundancies built in that the current one doesn't have. It will be able to treat 120 million gallons of water per day and is expected to come on-line in late 2024.
The changes approved Tuesday will bring the total cost of the project to just over $502 million. The city has approved a budget of roughly $553 million.
