L.A.W. Camp (Leaders, Achievers, Winners) welcomes a group of 140 campers, ages 10-14. The annual camp is presented in partnership by the Wichita Metro Crime Commission, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Police Department, and City of Wichita Parks and Recreation.
Joining the campers are 70 volunteers, including officers from 11 law enforcement agencies across Sedgwick County, military personnel from McConnell Air Force Base and the Kansas Air National Guard, as well as firefighters and EMS professionals from the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County.
Early Thursday afternoon, the Kansas Highway Patrol will land a helicopter at O.J. Watson Park in S. Wichita, allowing campers to explore the helicopter; campers will also explore firefighting, EMS, law enforcement, and military vehicles and equipment up close. They’ll also meet and engage with first responders from agencies throughout Sedgwick County while enjoying treats, games, and other activities.
Camp also includes a flag-raising ceremony led by the Sedgwick County Fire Department, and a flag-lowering ceremony led by Kansas Highway Patrol.
Campers participate in a variety of activities with their platoon and first responder leaders, including:
Kayaking and pedal boating on the lake
Demonstrations by law enforcement and military K-9 units
Self-defense training
Self-esteem and confidence-building workshops
Hands-on financial literacy exercises
L.A.W. Camp is a cornerstone of the Wichita Metro Crime Commission’s mission to help youth make good choices.
