The Sedgwick County Commission continues its work on next year's budget. Commission Chair Ryan Baty tells KNSS News the citizens want public safety, but he says it comes at a cost. He says the Sheriff's Department and county jail take up 40 percent of the county's property tax revenue. Baty says the jail's medical budget alone is 11 million dollars a year.
Baty tells KNSS News local government has many parts, and can be confusing to the average citizen. He says he tries to educate people as to what local governments do and how tax dollars are spent.
Baty commented during his weekly appearance with Steve and Ted in the Morning on KNSS.
