Construction cones are coming next year to a busy Delano thoroughfare.
The Wichita City Council has approved a long-awaited, $3.9 million road project to improve Douglas Avenue from west of Seneca to Meridian.
The city says the proposed three-lane roadway will have shared-lane markings for cyclists and clearly defined on-street parking. The project will improve storm water drainage in the area and will feature six-foot wide sidewalks and signalization improvements to the existing pedestrian crossings.
It took 77 minutes but council members eventually worked out a plan to install restrooms at A. Price Woodard Park and at Naftzger Park in downtown Wichita. Four hydration stations will be installed as well at locations yet to be determined.
The council approved the $630 thousand budget but not a bonding motion. Council members will take up that topic on October 3 in order to secure funding.
The city has been awarded a $150 thousand grant to restore and preserve the McAfee Pool at McAdams Park.
The grant from The National Trust for Historic Preservation – Conserving Black Modernism was awarded to the city in June. The funding will allow the city to complete a full-scale preservation plan for the pool, make it ADA accessible, repair vandalism and cover other expenses.
