A major Medicaid billing error is prompting Kansas school districts to return millions of dollars back to the state in overpaid funds.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the issue stemmed from a data mistake that went unnoticed for nearly a decade.
The state wants to take back more than $11 million from districts across Kansas. Wichita Public Schools has the largest payback at more than $3 million.
The KDHE said most districts owe less than $25,000. The agency is offering flexible repayment plans for districts to ease the sudden financial burden.
The Health Department is also taking steps to prevent future errors, including staff training and process reviews.
