Sedgwick County Commissioners have adopted a new personnel policy for paid parental leave.

The county will now offer eight weeks of full salary and benefits to eligible employees for use within six months of the birth, adoption or placement of a foster child. In addition, vacation and sick leave will accrue while the employee is on leave.

Commissioner Sarah Lopez, who gave birth to a new baby earlier this year, says the policy is important for families looking for financial stability.

Commissioner Ryan Baty's wife gave birth to a baby this past weekend. He says the adopted policy will make it a reason for employees to stay with Sedgwick County government.
